Pravahika is one of the most common diseases in the tropical countries and its severity varies from mild to severe fulminating type including life threatening complications sometimes. In modern parlance it is closely related with amoebicdysentery which is a national health problem in India and other developing and tropical countries, which is caused by Entamoeba histolytica, aparasite amoeba found in 25% of Indian population in their colon.
