The Evolution of Skills in Digital Platform Work: Implications for Employment in India’s Gig Economy
Downloads
The unprecedented expansion of digital platforms has significantly transformed the landscape of employment in India, resulting in the emergence of novel forms of job opportunities, while disrupting established notions of job security and the requisite skill sets necessary for adapting to this new employment paradigm. This scholarly paper delves into the evolving characteristics of platform work within the Indian context, placing a pronounced emphasis on the critical transition of skills. Through a comprehensive examination of existing literature, coupled with an in-depth analysis of the recent trends that have emerged in this domain, this report meticulously investigates the multifaceted ways in which digital platforms influence job creation processes, the evolving requirements for skills, and the overarching policies that guide workforce development initiatives. The findings of this research indicate that while platform work can offer a degree of flexibility and additional income to certain workers, it concurrently introduces significant new challenges and threats to the formation of essential skills, the stability of job security, and the regulation of labor markets. Furthermore, the paper proposes a series of well-considered policy recommendations aimed at fostering the development of an inclusive ecosystem that supports platform workers, while also contributing positively to the broader economy as it navigates the complexities introduced by digitalization. In conclusion, as India continues to embrace digital transformation, it is imperative that stakeholders engage in a collaborative effort to address the challenges and opportunities presented by platform work, ensuring that the benefits of this shift are equitably distributed across the labor force.
